Trans Awareness Week (Nov 13 – Nov 19) invites us to pause, reflect, and uplift the voices, stories, and lived realities of trans, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people in our community. At Moyo Health & Community Services, this week is both a moment of remembrance and a commitment to continued action—because our work in harm reduction, health equity, and community support is inseparable from the fight for trans dignity and liberation. Trans and gender-diverse folks, especially those who are racialized, migrants, or living at the intersections of multiple barriers, continue to face disproportionate violence, stigma, and health inequities. Recognizing these truths is the first step toward reshaping systems that have for too long excluded them.
Canada’s history of trans activism provides powerful reminders that change has always come from community. Figures like Michelle Ross, one of Canada’s earliest public champions for drag and trans rights, and Kyle Scanlon, a beloved Toronto activist and organizer whose legacy helped transform LGBTQ+ mental health supports, continue to inspire new generations of advocates. We also honour the long-standing leadership of Two-Spirit people, whose roles in many Indigenous nations hold deep cultural, spiritual, and community significance—roles that were disrupted, but never erased, by colonization. Their stories remind us that gender diversity is not new; it is ancestral.
Trans Awareness Week is a call not only to remember, but to act. It asks us to imagine a future where trans people are safe, celebrated, and free to thrive—and to take small, meaningful steps toward that world today. Together, we can continue honouring trans lives by building systems, conversations, and communities where every person’s identity is affirmed and valued.
