Lesbian Visibility Week is a time to recognize and uplift the voices, experiences, and contributions of lesbians across our communities. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the diversity within lesbian identities—including Black, Indigenous, racialized, trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit people who may identify with or within lesbian communities.
Visibility matters. For many, being seen and affirmed can be life-changing—especially in healthcare spaces where barriers, stigma, and assumptions can still exist. Lesbians and queer women may face unique challenges in accessing inclusive, culturally responsive care, including sexual health services that fully acknowledge their needs and experiences.
At Moyo Health & Community Services, we are committed to creating safer, more inclusive spaces where everyone can access care without judgment. This includes affirming identities, addressing systemic inequities, and ensuring that our programs reflect the communities we serve.
Below is a quote shared by one of our community members that highlights their relationship with visibility:
"As a Black lesbian whose life has always been in the margins, visibility hasn't always come easily. Infact, my first instinct is to hide, to blend in, because that was what my safety looked like at first. But then, I think of my younger self; the nights she spent praying to be "normal", and I am reminded that to be who/what she needed, visibility is not a choice, it's a necessity.
Happy lesbian visibility week!"
We continue celebrate the strength, resilience, and joy within lesbian communities. Visibility is not just about being seen—it’s about being supported, respected, and valued.
