Prioritizing Wellness: Mental Health Awareness Month

May 15, 2025

Mental health isn’t just about a diagnosis—it’s about how we feel, connect, and function in our daily lives. This year’s Mental Health Week theme, “Unmasking Mental Health” reminds us of the strength in gentleness, especially when life feels overwhelming. Whether someone is facing anxiety, depression, grief, or just trying to get through a tough day, leaving space for those who may appear fine on the outside to process their issues and reach out if they choose is incredibly important.

For those who may not know, masking is commonly referred to as hiding symptoms or acting contrary to one’s feelings to avoid stigma or social inclusion. Masking can look different for different folks as well. For Autistic and neurodivergent individuals masking can include mimicking neurotypical behaviour, forcing eye contact despite discomfort, rehearsing conversations or facial expressions, as well as hiding other behaviours such as stimming to fit in to social situations. Individuals with anxiety, depression, or trauma may force themselves to appear calm or cheerful to hide distress.

At Moyo Health & Community Services, we offer programs designed to support the communities we serve— through their hearts, lives, and spirits—while honouring each person’s lived experience. Our services are rooted in harm reduction, anti-oppression, and culturally responsive care. We’re here for individuals, families, and communities across Peel Region.

Here are some of the Moyo programs that offer support for people navigating mental health challenges:

1. Harm Reduction Program

Our harm reduction approach goes beyond substance use—it’s also about reducing the emotional harm caused by stigma, isolation, and trauma. Through outreach, safer use supplies, peer support, and referrals, we build trust and create safer spaces for people to talk openly about mental health without judgment. Access Moyo's Harm Reduction Services

2. 2SLGBTQ+ Community Support

We recognize that many 2SLGBTQ+ individuals face disproportionate mental health stressors, including discrimination, violence, and social exclusion. Our programming includes peer-led groups, affirming events, and access to inclusive resources that support resilience and belonging. You can access Moyo's 2SLGBTQ+ Programs: Queer Minds, Chai 'n' Chat, Removing the Barriers Training, Totally Outright, Rainbow Salad

3. Community Engagement and Outreach

There’s power in being seen and heard. Our Peer Engagement Workers use their lived experiences to support others—whether that’s checking in with folks on the streets, leading community workshops, or creating safe spaces for difficult conversations. You can access Moyo's Community Engagement Programs: Sex Workers Drop-in, Moyo Events

4. Black, African and Caribbean Communities Initiatives

We’re committed to culturally grounded mental health supports that address systemic racism and intergenerational trauma. Our work in Black, African and Caribbean communities includes education, healing circles, and wellness initiatives led by and for the community. You can access Moyo's ACB Community Initiatives: Theatre for Positive Mental Health, The Young Black Women's Project

5. Sexual Health & HIV Support Services

The intersections between sexual health and mental health are real. Living with or at risk of HIV can impact one’s mental and emotional well-being. Moyo provides non-clinical counselling, psychosocial support, care navigation, and compassionate space for people living with or affected by HIV. You can access Moyo's Sexual Health & HIV Support Services: Community Link Project (HIV Self-testing kit),  PrEP Clinic, Women & HIV/AIDS Initiatives (WHAI)

Mental health looks different for everyone, and there is no “right” way to heal or cope. Whether you’re seeking connection, support, or simply someone to talk to, Moyo HCS is here for you. We see you. We hear you. And we’re holding space for you.
